anyone have tips on how to use wool wadding for smoothbore? i'm using a modern wad and want to use traditional, i'm told wool patches cut just the right size , don't know what size and i'm eager to try this out.

hey beaudro i can't answer your question but it jogged loose something in my brain. i read some where that buckskin was used for that to.i'm sure thickness and the right size is something to consider on that too. have you or anyone else ever heard of such, just wondering if it's true

Billy, I have heard of that too as well as the wool patch. It would stand to reason to use either one depending on what was to hand. I`m sure that cotton patches were not always avaliable and a pair of red wool longjohns or wool socks were in jepordy. as far as the leather patch it would have to be thin or work like a sabot with a slightly smaller ball. correct me if I`m wrong but isn`t the purpose of the patch to hold the ball in place to keep it from shiftin in or fallin out of the barrel. most of those old timers knew their weapons and what they could feed them and keep them happy.

I'm still stumped on it a little, I'm hearing that wool patches are best, but it looks like buckskin would keep the gas from bypassing and do better with shot. I used a few cards, but I'd like to find out that was authentic before I do much more of it. Even the most authentic shooters are going to the factory made cards, and little information is there on what they used 200 years ago.
