I've hunted bear since I was old enough to hold a rifle in my hand.
And I mostly stick to bear hunting. Do a little coon hunting to train my dogs (I like to bear hunt with dogs)
Bear are unique. Hearing the dogs run a bear is one of the best experiences you can ever have. Just to turn the dogs out and let them get on a bear is something else.
I don't much care whether I make a kill or not...just long as my dogs don't get into too much trouble I pretty much tend to be "picky" about bear hunting.
I've hunted bear in TN, NC, VA, Maine, several different places in Canada.
Black bear.
Haven't hunted Grizz or Kodiak. And I ain't aiming ta. LOL!!

I spent a couple month cooking at a bear camp on Kizhuhak Bay, Kodiak Island. Yanked my son out of school mid-year and took him and I, on the best adventure ever. So many bear all over the place.! To go to the outhouse at night ya had to be armed. Even with a stainless Remmington 12 gauge loaded with alternating slug and 00buck.. I was still frightened.... They show no mercy. Kid saved a hunters lift that year. Bet they couldnt have done that for him in public school..spit-spit.

Wow what a great experience for you and your son.
Some of the best experiences of my life have been in Canada.
Some of the worst too.LOL!!
I go bear hunting with my boys these days. They live in Upper East TN and there is a bear season there. There is no bear season here. TN is bullish about their bear population and tend to have only a week of bear hunting limited to maybe 6 counties.
I don't want hunt a bear I'm afraid might attack me at the outhouse. Black bear tend to be a little frightful of human folk.
Now the Smokey Mountain bear is likely to come raid your trash can if he gets the chance. They are in the process of moving Smokey Mountain Black Bear into our area.
We have a black bear and a Cinnamon bear or Red Bear.
Mixing them with the Smokey Bear isn't a thing I'm too thrilled about...

Most likely not Buckskin. (Legal to kill a bear in La.)
I know last year in TN only 123 bear were killed for the season.
The Game and Fish are all over the bear hunters or anyone else who happens to be in the area of bear hunters. No way is a bear going to be killed and not checked out!!
(happens a lot around here when deer season is goin--non checked out deer)
Then when ya go to dress there's parts of the bear you have to give them.
Gall Bladder of bear can be sold at a pretty heafty price.

I went through the Apache Rez. last week in North New Mexico and saw a bear walking and I thought I was seeing a Griz .I got to my destination on the Navajo Rez. and asked my friend and he told me they didnt have Griz and it was a Cinnimon bear (a black bear right ?) I aint never seen a cinnimon bear before but that was one giant black bear if he was ,he sure walked like he thought he was a Griz. Cody

It is! Will be tanning another here soon after labor day. Some dad has one to tan but he's planning to take his son bear hunting this year and if the son gets one he would rather have his sons bear skin tanned. Awww. But either way, I get the honors! Can't wait! Good luck on your hunt Dave!!
