red thunder, thanks for the info on quilling. we have many pocupines here doing damage to my maize.a few questions please anyone! 1 does one split the quill 2how does one stain them, dye them 3your info says; make sure to make your quill damp and flatten it. does it not affect the dye? THE WHOLE LOT OF YOU ARE SO TALENTED AND KNOWLEDGEABLE, I LOVE THIS SITE!

hannes sorry the porcupine damage your maize, i think you have the large and thick African porcupine quills, right? like the picture., i have never use those for quillwork., your questions., 1, no you not split the quills., 2, i use most batik color, as well earth paint powder with water and vinegar., but there are other colors to use i dont now the name in english., 3, no that are not affect the dyeing if use batik dyeing, but can do with earth paint if not have enough vinegar., maybe some other here have more anwer?

not trying to hijack someone elses thread, but when you talk about quillwork, nobody can leave out Tara Prindles website with all the quill work instructions. It's where i got my start, and it's simple enough with good pictures. www.nativetech.org/quill/plait.html
