Recently I had the bight idea to use an altoid tin as a match box. I thought it would be handy to add to the camp box because the regular box of strike matches always seems to get trashed. The biggest problem with the strike plate on the paper match box is that it easily gets trashed/worn out. The new strike matches are not like the old ones, they do not have the different colored head that can be scraped against anything to light. Does anyone know what can be used as a substitute for the strike plate on the paper matchbox??? I have tried various grits of sand paper and it just wears off the match head.

Try 600 grit wet/dry paper. You can find it at auto parts stores.

wikipedia says.... Todays safety matches use a special striking surface containing 50 % phosphorus. The reaction between the phosphorus and potassium chloride in the match head produce spark. So when you strike against just any course surface your just rubbing the match head off. Try a strike anywhere match. The one with the white tip. You could also water proof them by dipping them in candle wax.
