Thanks guys. I really do not like spiders OR snakes.. I did wear my new cellphone holder outside the house today and well I could tell that this one young gal was probably 'creeped out', lol. Two other women commented that they really liked the way it looked however. I think I might make a thick skinned pouch with the wrapped quills and possibly try stitching some on just to see how that goes. Seems like it'd be fun to try.

Thanks Cody. Nice to hear. Well this was a bit more difficult, but patience will pay off, and I'm sure that given the right needles and the right thread.. the right sized quills and also the rightly moistened quills and the right braintan that someday I might make something that I'm proud to look at. well something to leave my kids to fight over after I'm gone.. no, not really, hopefully I hope to leave them with inspiration of their own to creat stuff with their hands.. I had two of the girls making little tiny pouches.. I see they're both missing so they had to have taken them along to school with them. Kinda nice to learn that! I will take pics of what the 9 and 13 y/o braintannist's daughter came up with later.. kinda cute. anyway I can see clearly by these pictures that I really need to try using a different thread for my work.. I think this one is not holding well enough and causing the thread just to be highly visible and well that is not what I had desired to see.. dah! Ah well just used what I had readily available. I really like this "elephant grain style buckskin" in this second picture.. It's pretty isn't it? Going to have to make some more of that kind of buckskin now. I can see that the looks of this skin can really lend an additional bit to something I might decide to make. I think a shooting bag or blackball powder pouch smoked real heavy and wtih this kind of a grain on it would really look outta sight! oh well I got big goals and designs on what I'd LIKE TO DO.. now just to DO it.. well gotta get off this d. computer... asta luego.. folks.. have a good one.

Your quill work is looking better than mine paulette. while my shoulder is on the mend i've been attempting a few practice runs with quill again. I was told to use a long beading needle, it seemed to help. It's long and thin, I suppose it helps the most because it does not make a very big hole, the thread seems to hold after i pass it through. It made it easier when the thread stayed a little tighter. I use a silk thread, it's real small, I was told this is the most authentic i could get. But I know some use a beading thread, and it feels a little bit coarse. I suppose this helps hold the thread while your making up your next quill. Hope i'm making sense. My first time with just any old thread made a really bad mess. I did much better with the right needle and thread. Looks like your on your way to being a good quill worker.

What do you use to flatten your quills with Paulette? I havn't done a lot of quill work, but when I did I would cut off the tips because they don't flatten out well the closer you get to them. I'd soak them in a small bowl of hot water to soften them real good, they flatten out then with even a coin or anything with a flat surface. If they are very flat it is easier to get them to fold where you want them too. Flatten out a bunch and let them dry. Lay your quill down, stitch over where you want the fold to be, then crimp the quill right on top of the thread, and the quill will fold where you want it to. It just helps to keep the line straight. I can see I''m going to have to pick up the next porky I see along side the road. I really like elephant looking skin too. And the color of your quills on the smoked hide. Very very attractive. Interesting texture on that skin!!! Thanks for inspiring me to give it another go. Are you using rit? and vinegar to set? or just dye? Your colors are vivid!!!

The bag looks nice. Thats the way to go with quillwork, practice and practice and more practice. Then you will find out how to flatten and keep the lines on your quills that looking more authentic. Good luck!!!

Looks like I'm going to have to order the fine or ultra fine silk nymo thread and also some beeswax! I think I will pick up some beading needles as well just to give that a try. Doesn't hurt to try! Been getting lots of good tips here and on the Paleoplanet forum as well. I've just been using a spoon to flatten out the quills. I've been flattening them out with a piece of cereal box cardboard below the quill. On a couple of them I think I squashed the pithy stuff right out of them! It made a natural color quill almost see through. guess that was a bit of overkill on the flattening! Anyway I do look forward to doing some more! I don't think the use of the rit dyes require the mordants to set them but I could have taken more time to rinse them better! Perhaps it is still not too late?

I use clear nylon thread (they call invisible thread)works great & it's hard to see, when I'm doing work like you showed JoAnne,I use masking tape as my guide lines instead of ink, also I've read that a lot of quillworkers keep an old towel or blanket in the car in case of road kill, just throw the towel or blanket on the porky & a couple of hundred quills come out.2feathers Attachments:

Beautiful quillwork, 2feathers! Thanks for the tip on the tape.. I had heard that too! Going to try it sometime, I hope. I haven't seen any dead porkies lately. Course having an old towel or blanket in the car seems like a great idea (instead of bringing the whole porcupine home with me!) Thanks.
TM.. I have some more of your buds relatives around here somewhere.. would like to make some MORE little pouches! Talked to AT&T tech support the the other day and they were thanking me for being a part of their FAMILY, lol.. Family?? yeah I guess! Needing some more smoked and softened brain tan!
