in the words of yosimine sam. i hates that stinking buffalo. it has been a trying couple of days. but i have came through. lacing that thing up was a major pain in you know where. i finally broke down and bought some string instead of un-twisting rope i had around here. after i finally got the buffalo laced up and every thing good and tight, my frame didn't look like it was going to be big enough any more. i decieded to go on ahead and get the buffalo washed down and deal with it latter. so when i went to move the frame the top board broke right in the middle. needless to say i started having major chest pains, my ears went to ringing louder than normal( they ring all the time) and i felt light headed. so naturally i threw a temper tantrum invented some new cuss words and went stomping inside mumbling obsenities to myself and set in my recliner pouting for close to a hour. when my chest pain went away and my breathing got back to normal, i went back out side to rebuild my frame. as i was scrounging for more wood to work with cody pulled up and pulled my rump end out of the fire. did i mention cody is a professonal carpenter. and a dern good one at that. after two days of cussing and fussing cody helped me get this buffalo laced up and washed. and i'm happy with this project again. and no body had to get hurt either. got some more photos from today to load up soon

My first reaction is "Better him then me!" ;D
Someday I will do one of those critters, just to have one for myself.
Looks like it's going ok, so far, hope you have somewhere to put it out of the weather?

well heres the latest on the buffalo. i got one side of the back bone done and started on the other side. it is still damp in places. it's been in the low 70's during the day and the 40's at night. the fun is only yet to begun. as you can see there are plenty of knife holes in the hide. and so far i've popped 4 holes with my scraper

Lookin' good Billy! My arms are getting tired just looking at your pics! I tried one many years ago and gave up. I finally took it out of the frame this fall and donated it to the woods. Someday I'd like to try it again, but this time I'll get a fresh, young hide. The one I tried, I had no idea what it was, so I was probably defeated before I got started. But I did learn a few things. Keep on it and keep sending pics! We're all in this together!! Dave

Hey there! Coming along nicely! Yep scraping them damp is the way to do it! They're very hard to scrape without being the right moisture consistancy like that.. and they're difficult to stitch up too without being just the right moisture consistancy sure makes it tough to work with holes too and then it's unavoidable at first to poke some yourself.. each one HURTS! anyway....you're doing just as can be expected on your own like that. you may wish to dry damping the flesh side back a bit, Billy. You will find that along the spine and the rump will require some heavy thinning to get it thin enough to soften. It'll be more light in color.. See? you can see on this bisons skin just where it will require a lot more thinning in just those areas. You can tell on this one that I'd just fleshed where the most thinning needs to take place. img.photobucket.com/albums/v117/1braintanner/100_1457.jpgAnd this is the same bison that I didn't thin enough the first time around! and the same places really need thinning! img.photobucket.com/albums/v117/1braintanner/upclose.jpganother thing that you should know is when you're applying some pressure on the scraping tool try to consciously apply the strongest amount of pressure mid scrape.. keep your tool sharp.. every 20-25 strokes the edge could use a touch up. Keep on keeping at it Billy! It's addicting!
