Since we've been talking buffalo...here's a couple of my buffalo parfleche cases. These are from summer hides.

yah, thats it, except i remove the grain as well. as long as you haven't put a tannin on it, its rawhide. parfleche is actually a french word from para meaning to deflect, and fleche, meaning arrow. the word was originally meant for shields that could deflect an arrow, and was later used to represent anything made from that material...which was rawhide.

the ifrst shield is buffalo neck. its about 3/8 thick. and twisted the frame when it dried. the second is deer and is only about 1/8-1/4 inches thick and ended up laying flat.

killstwo, redthunder, nice rawhide cases! i can see that they are very decoritive indeed. what are they used for , or were they used for? please ,can yougive me advice. i have nailed rawhide to a board, sopping wet. left it in the sun for weeks . take it off, and it twists into all shapes. i use rawhide to make the blinkers for a draughthorse headstall, but this twisting of the bonedry rawhide is annoying.

parfleche was essentially the Indian's suitcase. Everything was packed away, taken out to use, and repacked. They could be any size and shape to carry everything from clothes to food. Not sure why the rawhide is twisting on you. Try stretching it in a frame until dry. The nails might not be holding it tight enough.

very nice work. i really like the sheild with the hand print in it. does the red hand print symbolize anything? like counting coup or something? please excuse my ignorance on that hannes i'm no expert on making raw hide, i've only done three rawhides. the first i did by nailing it in a hide frame. it came out real flimsy and would twist and bend easy. the other two i did i laced in a frame, (one with grizz's help) and left them there until dry, and they both turned out to be good rawhides. sounds to me like killstwo said the nails aren't holding the hide tight

Redthunder, what kind of glue did you use when you glued the rawhide together?

The red handprint meaning will vary from tribe to tribe. for us it could mean two things...if the owner displays his own handprint, he has killed an enemy in hand to hand combat. if the handprint is a gift, its a transference of power. that sheild is given to my son, so wherever he goes in life, he will always have my power, my medicine with him.

If I remember right, badhand knows how to heat treat rawhide for making a sheild. How is that done?

Any rawhide can be thickened by soaking it, and then heating it. Even in the hot sun, although a good fire works better. It will shrink substantially and you can do this a couple times to further thicken. I cut it to shape, only several inches larger, bake it over a fire, (there are many documented ways to bake it) and then fit it to shape and repeat the process. It will almost triple in thickness, but become extremely hard.
