Paskinner, I have said that our way is not the only way to acheive a nice hide. It is just the fastest, easiest, least complicated way WE have found. I'd love to see a sample of your hides. Always nice to ooooh and ahhhhh over beautiful hides. Will do same. Not my beadwork, the guy who buys our hides now, did it. But ya, nice. Stimulating conversation.
And to anyone interested in our article, the two articles that are on NT right now, were written over ten years ago. The new one, dated 2008, is supposed to be up for view by next week. Please Disreguard the other older information, don't tan using it. It was what we were doing at that time, but have learned so much since then. lt

Here is a couple of elk I just tanned. Smallish cows around 20 foot. Got a bigger, thicker one in the works. First test video.

I don't do bull elk so I had this masked woman scrape it. Even scraping them is a pain. I was getting tired just holding the camera. ;D Sorry about the sidewards pic. There is a reason for the mask other than camera shyness.

I guess I shouldn't have posted that video. I had to finish scraping the elk today. "honey, can I have a drink of water?" (Sound of whip cracking.) "Get back to work!"
I'm sure ya'll know I'm kidding...
But this was the toughest scraping hide I've had in ages. Still lots of grain on it, especially neck and shoulders. I'm going to have to frame it after rinsing and clean it up with the dryscraper. I pre- stretched another thick one today. I'm trying some slightly different things on these thick elk as far as braining/softening and it's looking good so far. After I soften all of these three I'll know if I learned anything.

I have a slave scraper too. Sweet. He's always looking forward to dehairing those elk! Not. Here is an elk hide that we finished for our neighbor. He had started it a while back. It didn't come out quite as soft as ones we get to do from start to finish, but a nice hide for chaps, hes a cowboy.

Do you avoid the bull elk, like sane people do? What kind of sizes are the wild cows? I just finished this one yesterday, one of the few I get that must have been a wild bull, judging from the bullet holes and overall thickness. It was brained three times and pre-stretched on the frame twice. And pre-smoked. All that for only 19 square feet. I have an order for very large possibles bag from elk, so that'll be it's main use.

Yes we avoid them, we buy cow and calf, maybe a young bull occasionally. Your hides look very nice. dlt

Our large cows we get run on average 19 sq.ft. The elk above was a small bull our friend's wife got last year, it is a 23.
