Had a 4 year old summer farm elk and the nec and shoulders were all but impossible to scrape. I framed it and dryscraped it and it was a breeze. It scraped really easy. Probably took half as long to frame as to scrape!

Wanted to show how different elk are then deer. The thinner parts of this elk back-half are finished and like flannel, just working it off and on today, over the staker. These thin elk are always a bit thicker in the rump though, otherwise one braining would do it. You can see just how loose the fibers are compared to deer, it's just like flannel or more like cotton balls really.

Well, we've been off line all week, no power. It's been "fun" tanning without running water, but luckily there is a bit of water in the creek, just have to work a bit more for it. I scraped several elk, here are a couple finished ones. The ones I'm doing now are summer cows, real nice to work with, but the big one in the pic is the bull I scraped earlier. Three brainings, and I pre stretched this one pretty good before pre smoking it. The little elk in the middle is only 14 square foot and more like a deer hide to tan. You can get some idea by the second pic of how thick the bull is and it is very soft. It softened real easy, but it should after bucking, rinsing, braining twice and pre stretching well, smoking, and braining.

Yep nice hides PA! No power is a bummer and it was out here for two days. The wind from IKE blew over my smoke house but finally got it up with some help. Being 8 feet high made it a bit much for one person but came up easy with three of us.

I never have this many elk hides on hand at once, so I thougt I'd take a picture before I sent some of them away. Still have more to do, the fresh ones are mostly around 25 foot which is a nice size to work with.
