PA, I should make it clear that thats a friend of mine (she also tans -dry scrape). Not my wife. My wife's not to sure about all the tanning stuff, but does not mind the little bit of extra $$ that comes in. Thanks for the compliments!
Billy - keep working on that buff! It'll make elk seem like a piece of cake!!

fishinmusician, You have to forgive my husband... He has it so good... He doesn't have a clue about a wife that is not into the tanning stuff. ;D I can't tell you how many trapping lures that he has waved under my nose over the years. He was preparing me for those tanning smells I guess. Now he has even convinced me to "help". I grain hides for him sometimes. Billy, could even get on to him about the last elk that he did so fast. Guess who helped grain it! Of course I usually leave the thick necks for him to finish because I wouldn't want him to feel unneeded. ;D In all actuality I have it pretty good too. He never says a word when I get lost in a project and forget about lunch. He just comes in and finds himself some food. He is also very easy going when I spend our last dollar on some weaving or primitive skill book. By the way He's not for trade. He's a keeper! paweaver

Very purty indeed. Did the missus grain that elks neck by any chance? ;-)
I find that if you soak the elks neck in warmish hottish water for just a bit prior to graining and using a narrow beam that the grain and hair both wetscrape off quite a bit easier. Can't do this very repeatedly of course as the elk are lose fibered creatures to start with and of course warm hottish water isn't all that GREAT for any animal skins.. just a tip that works well for me.
Sweet hide and lovely 'buttercups' PA's of PA.

Nice work on that elk PA! I'm waiting for the elk ranch to call me to say he has more hides for me. The last two sold right away at the trade fair I was at in March. I was hoping to have some more for this summers' rendezvous season. Keep up the good work! Dave

Thanks all. Hope everyone's having a good summer. Here's another elk that I just smoked yesterday. Yeah, I (Loren) am doing the graining on these. You can see I'm not super concerned about a few bits of grain.

I've been having trouble with elk hides down by the tail section. It's usually about 1 -2 sq. ft. that is stiff. I keep braining that section until I can live with it. If anyone has anything to add if they have had the same issues or not. These are farm raised elk. Thanks for any info. Sorry it's been so long since I've posted.
